Networking Basics Flashcards
SMB/CIFS
Shares files, printers, and other network resources on Windows networks.
AFP (Apple Filing Protocol)
Use it to share files, printers, and network resources on Apple networks.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Allows an authenticated client to upload and download files from a remote server.
TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol)
Allows an unauthenticated client to upload and download files from a remote server.
X.500
A series of computer networking standards covering electronic directory services.
IMAP
Retrieves email from an email server (doesn’t delete email from server)
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
An outgoing mail server which sends email messages between server. The delivery of the message usually requires several “hops” which are recorded in the message header.
SSH (Secure Shell)
Provides strong authentication methods and is a much more secure version of administration and file copy programs.
SNMP
A management system for locating and diagnosing network activity and agents.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
Stream of data. TCP guarantees delivery of data and that packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent.
Telnet
A network protocol that allows a user on one computer to log into another computer that is part of the same network.
UDP
UDP is connectionless and does not guarantee reliable communication; it’s up to the application that received the message to process any errors and verify correct delivery.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
Allocates IP addresses to new devices joining the network
APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing)
Back-up addresses if the DHCP Server fails to allocate an IP address.
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
Queries a directory database. (An industry standard application protocol for accessing and maintaining distributed X.500 directories over an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Basically a networking phone book.)
