Network Topology Flashcards
what is a network topology
the pattern in which nodes are connected to a local area network
what is star topology
a network in which each device is personally connected to the server
what are the advantages of ring topology
- data can be transmitted from devices at the same time so communication is faster and reliable
- each device shares load so high traffic is handled
- expansion without disturbing any computers installed
advantages of star topology
- most reliable design as failures are local
- simple to troubleshoot as failures are local
- easy to upgrade or expand elements
what is bus topology
a network that has a central spine of network cabling called a bus that transports signals
what are the advantages of bus topology
- simple and cheap to install
- good for temporary work
- flexible as elements ca be added and removed with no disturbance`
what are the disadvantages of bus topology
- bus spine failing causes whole network to crash
- performance is affected by load
- bus cables are limited in length and must be terminated properly to avoid reflection of signal which crashes system
what is mesh topology
a network that interconnects each device with the others, sharing the load of communication
what is topology
how thing are laid out or connected together
what are the advantages of mesh topology
- fast data flow when working well, all data flows in one direction
- performs better than bus setup
- all devices can access resources on on network equally
what are the disadvantages of mesh topology
- setting up is more expensive than a bus setup
- packets of data have to travel through all devices to reach destination
- malfunction of one device compromises whole network
why is data transfer simple in ring topology
as data travels in one direction
what are the disadvantages of ring topology
- expensive to cable
- high levels of redundancy question cost effectiveness
- setup and maintenance is hard
what are the disadvantages of star topology
- uses the most cable
- additional hardware used adds to cost
- if server goes down whole network goes too
