Network Components Flashcards
Name 8 network components
- Client
- Router
- Switch
- Wireless Access Point
- Hub
- Server
- WAN link
- Media
What is a client ?
Any end user device that connects to the network
What is a server ?
A device that provides resources to the rest of the network
functions
Do all servers behave similarly ?
No. Different Servers provide different functions.
What’s the two most common configurations that servers come in ?
- Dedicated Hardware
- Specialized Software (virtualization)
What is a Hub ?
Older technology that connects devices together
What is the critical problem of a hub and why ?
Hubs lead to increased network errors as a Hub functions by taking information in one port and rebroadcasting to all the other ports . (One machine broadcasting ; all the other machines having to listen to it)
What is a WAP (Wireless Access Point) ?
A WAP allows wireless devices to connect into a wired network. It acts like a wireless hub.
What is a switch ?
A device that connects network devices together (like a next generation hub)
How does a switch function ?
A switch only transmits the information from its source port to the destination port
What is the advantage of a switch over a hub ?
A switch provides more security and efficient use of bandwidth over a hub.
What is a router ?
A router is a network device that connects two different networks together and forwards traffic to and from a network
What mechanism do routers use to forward traffic ?
Modern routers use IP addresses
What is media ?
Media connects two devices together or a device to a switch port
What are different types of media (Name 3)
- Copper Cable
- Fibre Optic
- Radio Waves
