Net + Flashcards
LAN
Local area network - A small network, limited to a single collection of machines and one or more cables and other peripheral equipment.
WAN
Wide area network - Spans distances measured in miles and links two or more separate locations.
VPN
Virtual Private Network - Work through secure tunnels through the internet. Require authorization and encryption to access hosts.
Peer to Peer Network
Most common type of network - the linking of two or more computers (up to 10) to share resources with no dedicated server
Client/Server Network
Server is a computer that shares it’s resources across the network. Client is one that accesses shared resources.
Most common network topology
Star
Types of cable or network medium
Fiber optic, coaxial, twisted pair
Typer of connector for the twisted pair cable
RJ-45 connector
What cable is fastest?
Fiber optic cable
Hub
Central point for connecting computers. Active requires electrical power to regenerate and amplify signal. Passive hub requires no external power and does not provide regeneration.
Switch
Maintains a switching table, keeping track of hardware address located on the net on each port. Sends the packet down the port in which the computer is looking for.
Firewall
Filters network traffic, filters applications access to network, can be hardware or software
Repeater
Connectivity devices that perform the regeneration and amplification of an analog or digital signal
Router
Connects networks for shared internet connections, Filters out broadcast transmissions. Prevents certain types of traffic from getting to a network. Monitors network traffic and reports statistics. Allows shared internet connection.
DHCP
Dynamic host control protocol - assigns IP address and tells clients where to go for domain name service, routers etc.
