Nerves Flashcards
Which nerves supply the abdomen?
T13 + L1-L5
What does the dorsal branch of T13-L5 supply?
Dorsal abdominal skin
What are the 3 branches of ventral T13 to L5 and what do they supply?
Medial - supplies TA, IAO, rectus abdominis and ventral abdominal skin
Lateral - supplies IAO and EAO
Lateral cutaneous - supplies lateral skin and EAO
What are splanchnic nerves?
Paired nerves supplying autonomic visceral afferent and visceral efferent nerve fibres
(nerves to and from organs)
Where do the major/minor splanchnic nerves synapse?
Caeliaco-mesenteric ganglion
What do the post ganglionic fibres of the major/minor splanchnic nerves travel with? Where do they go to?
Travel with arteries
To abdominal organs
How many nerves make up the major splanchnic nerve? What about the minor?
Major = 1 Minor = 1-2
How many nerves make up the lumbar splanchnic nerves? (single, few or many?)
Many
Where do the lumbar splanchnic nerves synapse?
Caudal mesenteric ganglion
First few may synapse in caeliaco-mesenteric ganglia
In the lumbar splanchnic nerves, what do the post-ganglionic fibres travel in? Where do they go to?
Travel in hypogastric nerves
To pelvic organs
Describe the length of the post-ganglionic fibres in the sympathetic NS compared to the parasympathetic NS
Sympathetic - long
Parasympathetic - short
In the parasympathetic NS, what is a plexus? Does it synapse?
Network of nerves associated with ganglia
Only when reaches organ of innervation
The vagus nerve consists of the left and right vagus nerve in the thorax. When does it split?
Splits as enter abdomen with oesophagus
The vagus splits as it enters the abdomen, but reunites to form what?
Dorsal vagal trunk
Ventral vagal trunk
What does the dorsal vagal trunk supply?
Visceral surface of stomach
