What is a Branchial Cyst
Mobile Cystic mass which develops due to failure of obliteration of 2nd pharyngeal/branchial cleft
Where is branchial cyst usually found?
Approx 1/3rd along sternocleidomastoid
Indications for surgical removal?
Recurrent infections
Pain
Compression on local structures
What is a thyroglossal cyst?
Remnant of the thyroglossal duct which is the tract along which the thyroid descends into neck from the foreamen caecum of tongue
Surgical removal of thyroglossal cyst?
Sisstrunk procedure- removes cyst and hyoid bone
What is a dermoid cyst?
Benign tumour of mature cells arising from ectoderm in embryological development. Have Keratinising squamous epithelium and contain skin structures including hair, sebaceous glands
Where are congenital dermoid cysts commonly found?
- medial and lateral aspect eyebrow
- midline nose
- midline neck and thorax
Treatment dermoid cyst?
Surgical removal- imaging prior as may communicate with deeper structures
What is a sebaceous cyst?
Do NOT arise from sebaceous gland, do NOT contain sebum
They are either:
- epidermoid cysts
- Pilar cysts originating from hair follicle
What do sebaceous cyst contain?
- fibrous tissue and fluid
- fatty keratinous substance- resembling cottage cheese
- May have serosanguineous fluid containing purulent and bloody material
Common sites sebaceous cysts occur?
Scalp
Face
Neck
Trunk
What is a lipoma?
Benign tumour made up of fat cells
Ludwigs angina?
severe cellulitis of floor of mouth
Usually Associated with dental abscesses
Causes elevation and posterior displacement of tongue
Can cause airway compromise
Needs I&D and abx
Cystic hygroma?
Congenital cystic malformation of lymphatic system
Majority visible at birth/detected by age of 2
Common site?
Usually posterior triangle of neck
