Navigation Flashcards
Define Navigation
The art and science of directing the movements of a vessel, from one position to another safely confidently and efficiently
Define Set
The direction toward which the current is flowing, expressed in degrees, true (direction water is going)
Define drift
The speed of the current usually stated in knots (speed the water is going)
Define compass Variation
The angular difference between true North, and magnetic north measured in degrees. Found in the center of the compass rose. There is an annual increase, or decrease an always round variation to the nearest whole degree.
Define Deviation
Defined as the magnetic influences of the vessel and the electronics on the compass expressed in east and west and changes for each heading recorded every 15° and is found on the boats deviation table.
What is Natural anomaly?
Happens when there is a large deposit of magnetic metals. Will be displayed on the compass rose where the variation is displayed.
Define bearing?
The direction of one point from another. Usually measured clockwise from 000 to 359°.
Define relative bearing?
Is the pairing of an object from the bow of your vessel, the HVAC, bow, or a formation. (we have a vessel off the customers 090)
Define target angle?
Your vessel, or the HVA’s position to the VOI “the VOI’s target angle is 000“ which means the VOI is moving directly towards you or the HVA.
Define course?
The intended direction of travel (where we want to go)
Define heading?
Actual direction the boat is traveling (where we’re actually going)
Define fix?
And accurately located position, determined with a high degree of accuracy.
Parallels of latitude
Move east to west and measured 00–90°north and south of the equator.
Longitude lines
Move north to south measured 000–180° east, and west of the prime meridian.
Line of position
A line of bearing to a known object, from which a vessel is presumed to be.
