Narrative Texts Flashcards
story
a sequence of events in their ‘natural’ temporal chronology
discourse
how the story is shaped by the narrator
Story oriented definition of narrativity
Structuralist narrative theory: narratives are characterised by a chronologically organised sequence of events -> event brings change in the situation
mediacy
is the discourse oriented definition of narrativity -> narrative transmission is constitutive
Experiential definition of narrativity
primarily concerns the content: ability of narrative texts to give expression to human experiences
plot
when a story (sequence of chronological organised events) is also linked causally and logically to one another
events
- smallest plot unit
- to propel the action and bring about changes in the situation of characters
- unintentional changes of situations are also events but a sequence of those do not consitute a narrative text because it needs agents (who make decisions)
kernels
main, propelling role within the plot
satellites
details/ events whose omission would not disrupt the logical sequence of the narrative
storytelling frame
creates the illusion of the presence of a narrator who is telling a story adressing a listener (>< to viewing frame)
viewing frame
reader is given the impression of following the events through the eyes of one of the characters
