Q

Nanoparticles vs standard chemotherapy

A

Nanoparticles
• better target specificity
• specific drug delivery, less systematic distribution
• few ADR
• less drug resistant (as it can modify drug delivery system)
• better tissue permeation - esp in solid tumours
•longer circulation time - less frequent dosing
• expensive in price

Chemotherapy
• non targeted deliver (affecting healthy cells)
• systematic distribution
• more ADR (hair loss, nausea immune suppression)
• drug reistance (as cancer cells can develop mechanisms - efflux pumps, change in target site)
• poor tissue penetration esp in solid tumours
• shorter circulation time - more frequent dosing
• cheaper in price

Q

How can nanoparticles be used as imaging enhancers

A

Coated with imagining agents, they can show exactly where tumours are

Q

What is their part in phototherapy therapy

A

Gold nanoparticles can covert light into heat, so we only target the cancer cells only

Q

Can they be loaded with chemo agents

A

Yes - loaded with chemo agents, they can be controlled released at target site

Q

Why do we need nano medicine

A

• avoid first pass metabolism
• avoid quick clearance
• better drug penetration
• avoid non specific drug distribution
