Musculoskeletal system - hands Flashcards
What does the ulna and radial bones of the upper limb allow?
Ulna: flexion and extension
Radius: rotation – pronation and supination
What do the bones of the hand provide?
The bones of the hand provide support and flexibility to the soft tissues.
What are the 3 types of bones of the hand?
Carpal bones (Proximal) – A set of eight irregularly shaped bones. These are located in the wrist area.
Metacarpals – There are five metacarpals, each one related to a digit
Phalanges (Distal) – The bones of the fingers. Each finger has three phalanges, except for the thumb, which has two.
How many bones are in the phalanges
3 in fingers and 2 in thumb
What is the joint between the metacarpals and phalanges called?
The join between the metacarpals and the phalanges are known as the metacarpo-phalangeal joints (MCP joints.)
What are the joints between the phalanx called?
The joints between the individual phalanx are known as the interphalangeal joint: proximal, distal.
Why are the bones of the hand called long bones?
The bones in the hands are long bones: lengthed middle section, longer than it is wide and proximal and distal ends.
The carpal bones are a group of eight, irregularly shaped bones. They are organised into two rows: proximal and distal
