Muscles Flashcards
What is the vasculature and innovation of muscle?
Vasculature: receive a generous supply of blood from at least two neighbouring arteries that enter separately and then connect within the muscle
Innovation: this is when the peripheral nerves around specific muscles cause them to contract or relax
What are muscles that produce a certain effect called?
What are muscles that actively oppose movements called?
Agonists
Antagonists
(roles reversed)
What are synergists and fixators and what are their purposes?
Fixator: These are muscles that stabilise joints, they don’t improve movement. The fixation and stabilisation of the joint involves co-contraction from opposing muscles when the joint is moving
Synergists: Muscles that don’t directly facilitate or oppose a movement, instead they can modify the action of the agonist to help prevent unwanted side effects
What is the origin versus the insertion of the muscle?
Origin: indicates more proximal or central attachment of the muscles
Insertion: indicates the more distal or peripheral attachments of the muscles
