Muscle-Shape Categories Flashcards
What type of muscle shape is spindle-shaped?
Fusiform
What type of muscle shape has a broad origin, and small insertion?
Convergent
What type of muscle shape has a tendon running its length and has angled muscle fibers on one side of it?
Unipennate
What type of muscle shape has a tendon running its length and has angled muscle fibers on both sides of it?
Bipennate
What type of muscle shape has a tendon running its length and has angled muscle fibers on more than 2 sides of it?
Multipennate
What type of muscle shape has parallel fascicles, sometimes “strap-like,” and sometimes held with aponeuroses?
Parallel
What type of muscle shape makes sphincters and the like?
Circular
What type of muscle category has multiple muscle bellies?
Multibelly
What type of muscle category is rectangular-shaped?
Quadrate
What is a fusiform muscle?
Muscle that is spindle-shaped (wide center, narrow endings) and has parallel fibers - the brachialis is an example
What is a parallel muscle?
Muscle with parallel fascicles for its whole length, which sometimes is “strap-like” (i.e. sartorius), or has aponeuroses (i.e. rectus abdominis)
What is a convergent muscle?
A muscle with a broad origin, and small insertion - forms a triangular, or converging, shape
What is a circular muscle?
A muscle that is shaped into an oval/circular shape - makes sphincters, canals, etc.
What are pennate muscles?
Muscles with a tendon running it’s length, which have angled fibers branching off of the tendon - uni-, bi-, and multipennate are variations of the above
What are quadrate muscles?
Rectangular-shaped muscles - an example being the quadratus lumborum
