Muscle Flashcards
what is a muscle?
muscles are soft tissues that contain protein filaments of actin and myosin that slide past one another
what is the function of muscle?
to produce force and motion (movement)
what are the types of muscle?
skeletal, smooth and cardiac
describe skeletal muscles
contraction is quick, forceful and usually under voluntary control. They contain bundles of very long, multinucleated cells.
describe smooth muscle
have slow, involuntary contractions- found in the stomach, uterus, bladder, intestine. They consist of collections of fusiform cells.
describe cardiac muscle
involuntary, vigorous and rhythmic contractions. They are composed of elongated, often branched cells bound to one another at structures called intercalated discs that are unique to cardiac muscle
Differentiation of types of muscles on histological aspects
skeletal muscles have cross-striations, smooth muscle lack striations and cardiac muscles have cross-striations.
what is sarcomere?
a sarcomere is the basic contractile unit of muscle fiber
what is sarcoplasm?
sarcoplasm is the cytoplasm of striated muscle cells
