Mrs Birling Part 1 Flashcards
The first thing we hear about Mrs Birling
About fifty, a rather cold woman and her husband’s social superior
Mrs Birling dehumanises Eva Smith as part of a class in socioty
girls of that class
Mrs Birling trys to intimidate the Inspector
you know, my husband was Lord Mayor only two years ago and that he’s still a magistrate
Mrs Birling thinks that Eva Smith created her own problems
I’m very sorry. But I think she only had herself to blame
Mrs Birling doesn’t accpet responsibility whilst the inspector is questioning her
I’ve done nothing wrong – and you know it.
Mrs Birling thinks that the childs farther is to blame as well
Go and look for the father of the child. It’s his responsibility.
Mrs Burling doesn’t believe that the lower class can have feeling
She was giving herself ridiculous airs…claiming elaborate fine feelings…that were simply absurd in a girl in her position.
Mrs Birling sees all lower class people as having no morrals
As if a girl of that sort would ever refuse money!
Mrs Birling doesn’t accpet any responsibility for Eva Smiths death
I’m sorry she should have come to such a horrible end. But I accept no blame at all
Mrs Burling is setting up Erik to be punsished serverly
he ought to be dealt with very severely-…make sure that he’s compelled to confess in public his responsibility
Mrs Burling says that the Inspector did nothing (nowing who the older higher class members will never change)
he certainly didn’t make me confess – I had done no more than my duty
