Motions and forces sp2 Flashcards
what is a vector quantity
has direction as well as magnitude
eg. velocity or forces
what is a scalar quantity
has only magnitude no direction
eg.speed
what is newton’s first law
According to Newton’s first law of motion, an object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it
if the resultant force on an object is zero this means a stationary object stays stationary and a a moving object continues to move at the same velocity
what is newtons second law
Newton’s second law of motion can be described by this equation:
resultant force = mass × acceleration or f=ma
In other words, the acceleration of an object increases if the resultant force on it increases, and decreases if the mass of the object increases.
what is the definition of momentum
momentum is the tendency of an object to keep moving or of how hard it is to stop moving. momentum depends on a vector quantity (velocity) and is a vector itself
what is a reaction time
the time between a person detecting a stimulus and their response
