Motion Particles Flashcards
What is the lhc and what does it do and for
A particle accelerator. It accelerates two beams of protons or ions and collides them head on from opposite directions in the hope of discovering new particles
What keeps a hammer through going in a circle
A inward acting resultant force, the centripetal force
How does a cyclotron make particles go in a circular motion
A constant magnetic field is applied at right angles to the particle which creates the centripetal force needed
How does a cyclotron work
A voltage is placed between two d shaped magnetic field regions, this is what accelerates the particles. As they speed up, there path spirals outwards towards an exit when it then exits at a tangent towards its target
Momentum formula
Mass * velocity
Collision rules for elastic and inelastic collisions
Elastic, all momentum conserved, all kinetic energy conserved
Inelastic, all momentum conserved, some kinetic energy transferred into other forms of energy such as heat
What is antimatter
Matter with the same mass of normal matter but opposite charge, positron is antimatter of electron
What happens when an electron and positron collide
Annihilation occurs, the mass of the two particles becomes gamma rays
What is formula for energy that can be produced by something of mass
E = m*c^2
E is energy in joules
M is mass in grams
C is lightspeed
What is lightspeed
3x10^8 m/s
