Motion (Chapter 9) Flashcards
What is velocity?
Speed in a given direction
What are the SI units for: Distance Time Acceleration Speed
Distance: Meter (m), kilometer (km), …..
Time: Second (s), minute (min), hour (hr)
Acceleration: m/s/s or m/s2
Speed: m/s, km/hr
What is acceleration?
The rate at which velocity changes.
How are speed and average speed different?
Speed is determined by dividing the distance traveled by the time taken at any point on the trip whereas average speed is total distance divided by total time.
What kinds of motion are considered acceleration?
Speeding up, slowing down and changing direction are all forms of acceleration.
How do you know if an object is in motion?
An object is in motion when its position in relation to a reference point is changing.
What are the variables in a speed graph?
Distance & Time
What are the two variables in an acceleration graph?
Speed and Time
What is a reference point?
A place or object used to determine if something is in motion
A train traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles travels 600 miles in 5 hours, what is the speed of the train and what is the velocity of the train?
The speed is 120 mi/hr and the velocity is 120 mi/hr south.
A cyclist rides 20 miles in 4 hours, then stops to rest for 1 hour. After this, he rides for another10 miles in 1 hour. What is the cyclist’s average speed?
Average speed is 5 mi/hr
A car starts form rest and increases his speed to 80 mi per hr in 4 seconds, what is the acceleration the car underwent?
Acceleration is 20 mi/hr/s
If a car travels at a speed of 25 mi/hr, how far will it travel in 4 hours?
100 miles
How long will it take for a car to travel 100 miles at a speed of 20 mi/hr?
5 hours
