Motion Flashcards
Define what scalar is and give an example.
Scalar is a quantity which has size (magnitude)
e.g. Mass, temperature
Define what vector is and give an example.
Vector is a quantity which has size and direction
e.g. Force, acceleration
Give a summary of distance, speed, rate of change of speed (scalar)
Distance: How far an object has travelled
Speed: Rate of change of distance
speed = distance over time
initial speed + final speed divided by 2
Rate of change of speed
= final speed-initial speed divided by time.
Give a summary of displacement, velocity and acceleration (vector)
Displacement: How far an object has travelled in a certain direction
Velocity: Rate of change of displacement
=displacement over time
=initial velocity + final velocity divided by 2
Acceleration: final velocity-initial velocity over time.
