PD Prac M751
What is the role of mortars?
The role of the mortar platoon is to provide organic indirect FS to the infantry battalion. The infantry battalion’s organic mortar platoon provides the CO neutralising, suppressive and destructive indirect fire at decisive events supporting the close in battle to allow their forces manoeuvre to defeat the enemy.
What is the luminosity in candela and the burn time of the CART 81mm MORT ILLUM M853A1 FZD MTSQ M772?
525000 candela for 50 seconds

Flash, audible noise, smoke visible to 1500m
What is the illumination and burn time range for the CART 60mm ILLUM M721 MTSQ M776?
min 250,000 candela for 32 seconds
max 400,000 candela for 40 seconds
What are the actions on time set for the CART 81mm MORT ILLUM M853A1 FZD MTSQ M772?
At preselected flight time, fuze functions resulting in initiation of the fuze booster. The internal pressure build up as a result of the fuze booster causes separation of the front and tail cone sections of the mortar body by fracturing the shear pins. On separation of the mortar body, the M853A1 Illuminating Assembly is ejected rearwards from the front section of the mortar body. Simultaneously the fuze booster initiates the ignition system of the illuminant canister. Deployment of the parachute assembly controls the rate of descent of the illuminant canister. The canister burns a minimum of 50 seconds generating at least 525,000 candela within a 1200m diameter area.
What is the lifespan of the Gas Absorption Module (GAM) employed on the CART 81mm MORT SMK RP M819 FZD MTSQ M772 and what is its function?
7-10 years, the module absorbs phosphine gas
