What’s happening in the south?
Many former Latin American colonies are gaining independence and forming new republics.
Goals of U.S Government
Increase foreign trade
Expand borders
Isolate from Europe

British Columbia and had trading posts as far south as San Francisco

It was fairly easy and he was popular among citizens

Secretary of State
What did Adams and Monroe want to do?
Protect new Republics and take advantage of trade opportunities
What did the British propose?
Joint warning with US telling Europe to stay out of Latin America
Would include British Navy Enforcement
Why did they decide to act alone?
So they wouldn’t have future problems with territory expansion and the British.
Joint proposal would stop US from annexing Texas, Cuba, and other areas
Britain would back them reguardless
When did Monroe give his address?
1823
What was said in Monroe’s address?
“The American continents … are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.”

The United States would not interfere in internal affairs or the wars between European powers.

The United States recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies and dependencies in the Western Hemisphere.

The Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization.
