monomers and polymers Flashcards
monomer
the smaller units from which larger molecules are made
polymer
molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together
examples of monomers
monosaccharides, amino acids and nucleotides
what joins molecules
a condensation reaction joins two molecules together with the formation of a chemical bond and involves the elimination of a molecule of water
what breaks molecules
a hydrolysis reaction breaks a chemical bond between two molecules and involves the use of a water molecule
covalent bond
2 or more atoms held together by the sharing or transfer of electrons in the outermost shell
- stable
ionic bond
electrons are transferred from one atom to another
intermolecular forces
are not bonds
weak forces of attraction between molecules
H-bonds - water
O atom pulls all 8 electrons towards itself, causing that part of the water molecule to to be a negative dipole
H atoms known as positive dipole
the positive dipole is attractive to the negative dipole of another water molecule forming H-bond
H-bond
a weak force of attraction between an H atom of one molecule and either an O atom or an N atom of another molecule
condensation reaction
a chemical bond forms between 2 molecules and a molecule of water if produced
hydrolysis reaction
a water molecule is used to break a chemical bond between 2 molecules
