Theory of Linguistic Determinism : Edward Sapir
The difference between Language and Thought
An interlinked relationship
The language you use determines your ability to think about different ideas.
Linguistic Relativity
- Originally proposed as an axiologically neutral theory
- Originally rooted in the semiotic tradition
- Explored in both the sociology-psychological and socio-cultural
Muted Group Theory
- Rooted in linguistic relativity..
- Language names certain experience and therefore determines what is socially recognized
- Focuses on how dominant discourse silences (or mutes) groups that are no in the societal mainstream.
- What experiences are not named?
Critical Theory
The goal of critical theory is
- inclusion
- Revision
For example: invitational rhetoric
Critical Theories: Hegemony
Rooted in Marxism
Ideology - fundamental taken for granted assumption about the way the world works. And this influences situations and events.
Ideology
- Power
And leads to manufacturing consent.
- you can be involved in your own oppression.
“Hegemony does not refer to simple domination, but rather involves attempts by various groups to articulate meaning systems that are actively taken up by other groups”
“The involvement of those without power in the normalization of their own subjugation”
Palo Friere: Pedagogy of the oppressed - “internalized oppression”
