Momentum Flashcards
Define momentum
Momentum is defined as the product of the mass and the velocity of the object. (P=MV). (P=M (V-U)). Fnet x delta t = mass x delta v
Show the equation for Newton’s 2nd law and then show the derived version for momentum.
Fnet = mass x acceleration
Fnet = change in momentum / change in time
Define impulse.
Impulse (J) is the product of the net force and the contact time for which the force acts.
J = Fnet x 🔺time
= m(v-u)
=🔺p
State the law of conservation of momentum.
The law of conservation of momentum states that the total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant (an isolated system is one that has no net external force acting on it).
Ptotal before = p total after
Give an expression for the law of conservation of momentum.
M1U1 + M2U2 = M1V1 + M2V2
