What is a moment
The turning affect of a force
What does a larger force or a long distance spanner mean
A large moment
What needs to be done to get a maximum moment for a spanner
Push at right angles perpendicular to the spanner
Pushing at any other angle means a smaller distance so smaller moment
What happens if the total anticlockwise moment equals the clockwise moment about a pivot
The object is balance and won’t turn
What are gears
Circular discs with teeth
What do teeth do on a gear
Interlock so that turning one causes another to turn in the opposite direction
What are gears used for
Transmit the rotational effect of a force from one place to another
What does a large Gear do
Gives a bigger moment because the distance to the pivot is greater
With a larger gear spin faster or slower than a small gear
Slower
What do levers do
Increase the distance from the pivot at which the force is applied and since m =fd less force is needed to get the same moment
What do levers make it easier to do
To do work e.g lift a load
