Molecules and Bonds Flashcards
What’s the farthest layer of a electron called?
The valence shell: controls how atoms connect with atoms to make molecules, molecules connect with molecules to make matter
How many electrons are required to make an atom complete?
8 electrons in the valence shell: if they are missing some electrons they will share electrons or take them
What is a covalent bond?
A bond where atoms share electrons
What is a ionic bond?
A bond where atoms give and take electrons
Are all covalent bonds equal?
Two atoms could share electrons so they have 8 in their valence shell: if one atom is bigger than the other, the electrons will crowd the bigger one (so no)
What’s a polar covalent bond?
Since electrons are negative, the atom they spend their time around becomes more negative
(the atom that they spend less of their time with becomes more positive)
Why are polar covalent bonds important?
They’re important because of water: water is the most important in a polar covalent bond
(almost any substance with an ionic bond can be dissolved in water)
