Module 7 - Electrolytes Flashcards
Electrolytes
chemicals or nutrients present in the body’s fluid compartments and have important functions
What do electrolytes do?
regulate fluid volume, regulate cardiac contractions, and provide stimulation to skeletal muscles that allow for movement
Where is sodium found
in extracellular fluid compartments (plasma and interstitial fluid)
Where is chloride found
in extracellular fluid compartments (plasma and interstitial fluid)
Where is calcium found?
in ECF, ingested in foods and milk products, stored in bones as well
what hormones control calcium? and what else influences calcium levels?
Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin
Vitamin D and phosphate ions
what mineral typically follows sodium
chloride
how does the body get potassium?
Ingested through food, stored in bone and plasma proteins
What direction does the potassium sodium pump move each respective particle?
sodium out of the cell and potassium into the cell
How do humans get magnesium?
they ingest it in their food and 50% is stored in bones
Serum levels of magnesium are closely related to serum levels of …
potassium and calcium
