Module 2: Workplace Safety Flashcards
• OSHA
Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
• MSDS/ SDS
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) / Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document that provides health and safety information about products, substances or chemicals that are classified as hazardous substances or dangerous goods.
• Time-Weighted Average
OSHA air quality monitoring test that detects the level of formaldehyde gas present over 8 hours.
• Permissible exposure limit
PELs are legal limits for the degree to which workers may be exposed to chemicals and other hazards (such as noise) without suffering harm.
• Short Term Exposure Limit
STELs or ceiling limits are the maximum levels to which workers may be exposed, even for a very short period of time.
• Action Level
Generally, set at one half of the permissible exposure limit (PEL).
• Formaldehyde Rule
The employer shall assure that no employee is exposed to an airborne concentration of formaldehyde which exceeds 0.75 parts formaldehyde per million parts of air (0.75 ppm) as an 8-hour TWA.
• Bloodborne Pathogen Rule
This standard seeks to prevent serious occupational infections among employees.
• Primary Disinfection
Disinfection carried out prior to the embalming process.
• Concurrent Disinfection
Disinfection practices carried out during the embalming process.
• Terminal Disinfection
Disinfection and decontamination measures after the preparation of the remains.
• Universal precautions
Universal precautions are intended to prevent parenteral, mucous membrane, and non-intact skin exposures of health-care workers to bloodborne pathogens.
