Module 1: What is life? and cellular traffic Flashcards
What are the characteristics of life?
- Made of cells
- Acquire and use energy
- Grow and reproduce
- Evolve using DNA
- Interact within an ecosystem
What differences and similarities do prokaryotes and eukaryotes have?
Both have ribosomes, cell walls, and a cytoplasm
Prokaryotes are simple and small whereas eukaryotes are larger and more complex.
What types of cells will you see in the tanks in lab?
Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes
What are some examples of eukaryotic cells in lab?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and other organelles
Plants and algae
What are some examples of prokaryotic cells in lab?
Prokaryotic cells don’t have a nucleus and other organelles
Cyanobactiera and Heterotrophic bacteria
What are some examples of autotrophs (make their own food)?
Plants and cyanobacteria
What are some examples of heterotrophs?
Animal like plankton and heterotrophic bacteria
What are some examples of zooplankton?
Animal like plankton and heterotrophic bacteria
What are some examples of phytoplankton?
Cyanobacteria and algae
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains the nucleotides and DNA,
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
It processes and transports new material.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Stores ATP which is the fuel of the cell.
What is the function of the vesicle?
Cellular containers that transport, store, and recycle materials.
What is the function of the Golgi?
The new materials made in the ER are sent here and then distributed to other places.
What is the function of ribosomes?
They make proteins
