module 1 vocab Flashcards
Surface Embalming
The preservation of the body tissues by direct contact with embalming chemicals.
Hypodermic Embalming
The injection of embalming chemicals directly into the tissues of the dead human body through the use of a syringe and needle or trocar.
Cavity Embalming
The direct treatment of the contents of the body cavity (thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic) and the lumina of the hollow viscera; it is usually accomplished in 2 phases (aspiration & injection) using a trocar.
Vascular (arterial) Embalming
The use of the blood vascular system of the body to accomplish temporary preservation, sanitation, and restoration of the dead human body; this is accomplished through injection of an embalming chemical solution into the arteries and drainage of blood from the veins.
Restoration
Treatment of the deceased in an attempt to recreate natural form and color.
Temporary Preservation
Science of treating the body chemically so as to temporarily inhibit decomposition.
Decay
Decomposition of proteins by enzymes of aerobic bacteria.
Disinfection
Destruction and/or inhibition of most pathogenic organisms and their products in or on the body.
Enzyme
Organic catalyst produced by living cells and capable of autolytic decomposition.
Decomposition
Separation of compounds into simpler substances by the action of microbial and/or autolytic enzymes.
Protein
Organic compound found in plants and animals that can be broken down into amino acids.
