Module 1 Flashcards
What are the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Eukaryotes- true nucleus with nuclear membrane, several chromosomes
Prokaryotes- no nuclear membrane, single circular chromosome
Name the four types of microorganisms.
Protozoa, fungi, bacteria and viruses
What are the kingdom names?
Plantae, animalia,protista and prokaryote/monera
What are the taxonomic groups?
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, tribe, genus, species
What is the suffix for families?
-aceae
What is the suffix for tribe?
-eae
What is a type strain?
Reference specimen
What are the two types of subspecies?
Biovar- distinguished biochemically/physiologically
Serovar- distinguished antigenically/serologically
What is the greatest flaw with the key system of classification?
Genetically different organisms end up in the same categories if they have similar characteristics.
Why do different species sometimes exhibit the same G/C content?
They have different sequences with similar amounts of G/C bases.
What is DNA hybridization?
DNA is separated to ssDNA and combined with ssDNA of another organism. The degree of hybridization determines their similarity.
What is the best/most common way to classify organisms?
Numerical taxonomy- looking at a wide variety of characteristics (G/C content, hybridization, etc). 90% or greater indicates same species.
What are the three disciplines of taxonomy?
- Classification
- Nomenclature
- Identification
