Module 1-3 Flashcards
What are the properties of life?
order, sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, growth and development, regulation, homeostasis, and energy processing
What is the smallest fundamental unit of structure and function in living organisms?
the cell
What is the smallest and most fundamental unit of matter?
an atom
What is a population?
All the individuals of a species living within a specific area
What is a community?
the sum of populations inhabiting a particular area
What is an ecosystem?
all the living things in a particular area together with the abiotic, non-living parts of that environment
What is a biosphere?
the collection of all ecosystems, and it represents the zones of life on earth.
What are organs?
collections of tissues grouped together performing a common function
What are tissues?
groups of similar cells carrying out similar or related functions
What are prokaryotes?
single-celled or colonial organisms that do not have membrane-bound nuclei or organelles
What are eukaryotes?
cells that have membrane-bound organelles and a membrane-bound nucleus
What is biodiversity?
the variety of life and its processes, including the variety of living organisms, the genetic differences among them, and the communities and ecosystems in which they occur
What is genetic diversity/genetic variation?
This measure of diversity looks at differences among individuals within a population, or at difference across different populations of the same species.
What is species diversity?
the number of different species in a particular ecosystem or on Earth.
What is ecosystem diversity?
the many types of functional units formed by living communities interacting with their environment
