Primary text
text which during the perfomrance is spoken aloud by the actors
Secondary text
includes all constituent parts of dramatic text that are not part of the dialog (e.g. stage directions)
Introduction inside the action
Introduction by a character who also is involveld in the communication level assumes the role of a narrator
Introduction outside the action
Introduction by a character who is presiding over events as a kind of director
Initial exposition
all expository information is given in an isolated passage at the beginning of the text (separate from the action proper)
Integrated exposition
expository information is distributed in small quantities throughout the text, woven into action
Wit / comedy of manners
- special kind of dialogue
- not merely humorous
- verbal duel of a highly subtle, intellectual nature
- characters who are discribed as wits make frequent use of certain rethorical figures (e.g. repetition of unusual similes an metaphors)
- is a rhethorical figure of paradox, linking term that seemingly have nothing to do with each other/contradicory
soliloquy
when a character is alone on stage while speaking aloud their innermost feelings (thoughts) ~ Selbsgespräch
monologue
when a character speaks alone, but in the explecit presence of others ~ Monolog
The exposition
informing the reader or audience abaout the history preceding (time, place of the action & characters)
monological aside
a character is voicing a thought.

aside ad spectatores
a character adresses directly to the audience
Stage direction: Adressing the audience
dialogical aside
unnoticed by other characters on stage a group of characters conduct a conspiratorial conversation in whispers
Stage direction: Aside to X
discrepant awareness
the reader/audience has more or less knowledge than the characters
congurent awarness
occurs when character and audience have the same information
