Military Awards
What is the objective of the military awards program?
Provide tangible recognition for acts of valor, exceptional service or achievement, special skills or qualifications, and acts of heroism not involving actual combat (1-12)
What is an “award”
Recognition given to individuals or units for certain acts or services
What is a “decoration”
Distinctively designed mark of honor denoting heroism or meritorious and/or outstanding service and/or achievement for individuals and units
What is a service medal
Service (campaign) medals and service ribbons denote honorable performance of military duty within specified limited dates in specified geographical areas
What is the purpose of awarding badges/tabs?
provide public recognition by tangible evidence of the attainment of a high degree of skill, proficiency, and excellence in tests and competition, as well as in the performance of duties (8-1)
How are badges recommended for approval?
Memorandum or 4187 (8-5)
Is there a time limit pertaining to awarding badges?
No (8-54)
What is the time limit for awards or decorations?
Should be administratively entered within two years (1-14)
What is a DA 638?
Recommendation for Award
When is a DA 638 used?
To initiate, process, and approve award recommendations of all U.S. Army individual decorations, to include valor and heroism decorations (3-20)
When are bullet comments used for an award?
MSM, ARCOM, and AAM - up to four separate achievements with four lines each (3-21)
When are narrative comments used for an award?
Legion of Merit and above (3-21)
When are DA General orders used?
Awards made by the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the SECARMY (1-27)
When are permanent orders used?
Decorations, Army GCM, and Badges (1-27)
