MMI UMass Flashcards
Tell me about yourself.
- from RI
- twin sister
- went to brown - had to learn who I was
- loved public health and its far reaching affect
- concentrate, MPH, epi now
- think about medicine and how I value personal relationships
- these clinical experiences can translate to good public health practices/improvements
- ultimately want to work as a primary care physician in conjunction with PH to improve health of individual patients and the community they live in
Why do you want to be a doctor?
Have always loved public health and the impact on the population level
but have had experiences that have shown me that sometimes you need a closer approach
Educating inmate about vaccination - more likely when you sit one on one
I value the personal relationships formed in medicine and think these will add value to PH skills
Medical training combined with population health will allow me to impact health on multiple levels
Ultimately want to be an MD with focus on PH and community health
Why UMASS?
from RI, get to practice with the patient populations I have worked with and hope to continue
emphasis on primary care - I hope to use primary care to tie into my PH background
public school - invested in the surrounding community
PURCH track ties into this - hope to learn this patient and community-centered approach to medicine
Correctional health educators - involvement with correctional facilities
Culinary medicine - using food to help address health issues - central to my PH research and thesis
Do you have any questions for me?
In your opinion, what is the best part about UMass that doesn’t get a lot of attention?
Based on your experiences, do you have any advice to students for how to be successful?
What do you think is one of the biggest HC issues today?
Has UMass curriculum changed due to COVID?
Would you still go back and become a doctor?
Time you had a different opinion than someone else.
At work, the correctional facilities are supposed to provide us with all of their COVID test results
time consuming - each test uploaded individually
I advocated for a way that they could send us the results in aggregate, and we could upload them
My boss disagreed - in her opinion, we were giving them the funding and it was their responsibility
We discussed the pros and cons - tests were taking too long to be entered, etc.
Manpower it would take on our end to do a batch upload
Ultimately decided to do it
What do you do in your free time?
On a regular basis, I am very active - I think this comes from swimming in college
Workout everyday in a variety of ways, walking etc.
Similarly, love hiking on weekends, skiing in the winter, in a volleyball league
Love to bake, especially now that it’s the fall - pumpkin, birthdays are a chance to bake
When I’m stressed, I like to do jigsaw puzzles - studying for the MCAT
Something not in your application?
I was on jury duty and it really interested me in the legal system and how that process works
I had never had jury duty and was selected to be on the jury for a first degree murder trial
There were many topics including racism, gun rights, police involvement, technology surveillance
Very interesting to work with a group of random people to come up with a solution that has an extreme impact on someone’s life
Pros and cons of mandated vaccines?
PROS: decrease morbidity and mortality, give people defense against a disease, relatively safe - we have a hard approval process, make sure everyone you are working with is protected
CONS: autonomy, it is your body, negative implications on HC system - mass exodus of HC workers
can be costly, chance they have negative effects later on (cardiomegaly with COVID)
Time you miscommunicated.
Helping someone in the application process to med school.
Resuscitating someone’s child and approaching them after.
Limitations around bringing controversial speakers to campus?
Situation where you were a team member - leadership and conflict resolution.
ex: jury duty - come up with solution about someone’s life. Conflict over what the outcome is. Leadership in terms of explaining public health terms, etc.
ex 2: Part of a publishing team for my undergraduate thesis. It was based on my thesis, so I was heavily involved in the writing
End of life care/palliative care/hospice?
Immigrant family who does not speak english. Would you use interpreter or ask someone who speaks the language to do it?
