Mitosis and Cell Cycle Flashcards
How many chromosomes are there?
46 chromosomes
How many pairs of chromosomes are there?
23 pairs of chromosomes
Where are chromosomes found?
In the nucleus
What do chromosomes make up?
DNA
How are pairs of chromosomes made up?
You inherit one pair from your mother and the other from your father
What are the 3 main stages of the cell cycle?
- Interphase
- Mitosis
- Cytokenisis
What are the 3 stages of the first stage in the cell cycle, Interphase?
G1 - growth and duplication
S - DNA Synthesis
G2 - growth and preparation for mitosis
What is G1 in Interphase?
Growth and duplication
What is S in Interphase?
DNA synthesis
What is G2 in Interphase?
Growth and preparation for mitosis, here it checks for mistakes so it can replace any damaged cells
What is G0?
Cell cycle arrest
What is Stage 2 of the Cell Cycle?
Mitosis
What occurs in Mitosis?
The nuclear membrane breaks down, chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and the arms pull apart to opposite sides of the cell.
The nuclear membrane reforms around each new set of chromosome, they become the new nuclei.
What is the last stage of the cell cycle?
Cytokenisis
What occurs in Cytokenisis?
It is the physical separation of the cells and divides into 2 daughter cells
