mitosis Flashcards
humans characteristic number of chromosomes
- 23 pairs.
cell cycle
Mitotic phase - division
Interphase 90% -
3 subphases: G1 S G2
5 Mitosis stages
prophase prometaphase metaphase anaphase telophase
Interhase (s and g2)
S - chromosomes duplicated
G2 - centrosomes duplicated
Stage 1 - prophase
chromosomes condense
duplicated chromosome = sister chromatids
spindle forms
centrosomes - move apart (pushed by microtubules)
stage 2 - prometaphase
nuclear envelope fragments
microtubules stick to kinetochores (centromere) = chromosomes move
other microtubules push each other away
Stage 3 - metaphase
(line up)
chromosomes move to imaginary metaphase plate (tug of war)
centromere of sister chromatids straddle metaphase plate
Stage 4 - anaphase
chromatids separate (now separate chromosomes)
new chromosomes migrate to poles
cell becomes egg shaped
stage 5 - telophase
identical set of chromosomes at either pole
chromosomes uncoil
2 nuclear envelopes form
cytokinesis - microfilaments act like drawstrings on a bag
