Mineral and IG Rock Test- Atoms & Elements Flashcards
What is an atom?
A very tiny particle that can’t be broken down into smaller particles without losing its properties.
What three particles make up an atom?
- Protons
- Nuetrons
- Electrons
What are protons?
Tiny particle that has a positive changed and are found in the neuceuls of an atom.
What are neutrons?
A tiny particle located in the nueclues of an atom that has a neutral charge.
What are electrons?
A really tiny particle that has an “electrial charge” that move crazily around the nuclues.
What is an element?
A substance made up of one kind of atom.
What determines which element an atom is?
The # of protons (electrons will have the same #)
What happens when you slipt an atom in half?
It becomes a new element.
What happens when you split an atom in half tht is not devisable by two?
You get a mix of differant atoms (two differant atoms that add up to the orgianal atomic number)
What are the big eight?
A gropu of elements that make up 98% of amll rocks and minerals
What elemenst are in the big eight?
- Oxygen
- Aluminum
- Iron
- Silicon
- Magnesium
- Sodium
- Calcium
- Potassium
What element is represneted by H?
Hydorgen
