voted a triumph and many other distinctions
proposals to decree him certain laudatory cognomen (but were vetoed by Augustus who said he would be satisfied with the one he would receive when he died (Augustus))

A

saw that the disaster had been due to Varus’ rashness and neglect of precautions against surprise so decided to only take strategic decisions with the assent of his general staff.He had before always had confidence in his own judgement, now relying on a large military council.

A

His attention to detail increased.
every crossing of the Rhine he limited the amount of permissible baggage,
inspected every transport wagon to make sure they only carried necessities
Ate on the bare turf
Slept in the open as often as not
Always committed his daily and emergency orders to writing
Any officer that did not understand his instructions was required to consult him personally, at any hour of the day or night.

Imposed the severest discipline on his men
Revived obsolete method of punishment or branding them with ignominy for misbehaviour
Officially censured a legionary for sending a few soldier across the river as escort for one of his freedmen hunting there.
