define obedience
a form of social influence in which an individual follows a direct order. The person issuing the order is usually a figure of authority, who has the power to punish when obedient behaviour is not forthcoming.
what was the aim of Milgram’s experience
Wanted to know if the Germans were ‘different’, and more obedient to authority figures, than people in other countries.
He also wanted to find out if ordinary American citizens would obey an unjust order from an authority figure and inflict pain on another person because they were instructed to.
what was the procedures of Milgram’s experiment
40 American males from various backgrounds.
participants all volunteers who responded to an advert in a local paper to take part in an experiment on ‘punishment and learning’.
40 participants were invited to a laboratory at Yale university and upon arrival they met with the experimenter and another
