Midterm Readings Review Flashcards
Lucal’s “What It Means to be Gendered Me”
We cannot escape “doing gender”. The binary/two-and-only-two gender structure is rigid and creates consequences for those who do not meet the established norms.
Nanda’s “Multiple Genders Among North American Indians”
Not all cultures contain a binary gender system such as Native American cultures and early colonists were wrong in dealing with their different cultures and their different gender structures with an ethnocentric mindset. Gender variations exists.
Preves’ “Beyond Pink and Blue”
Intersex is not necessarily a problem for the individual with sex characteristics associated with the two gender categories psychologically or physically but mainly a social problem for parents and the individuals around those who are intersexed because they do not conform to societal norms.
Lepowsky’s “Gender and Power”
The Melanesian people of Vanatinai demonstrate a culture of gender equality through the acknowledgment and respect of each individual’s personal autonomy ad the equal opportunity to own land and gain prestige. There is no centralized power so without the enforcement of one power over another there exists gender equality.
Mernissi’s “Size 6 - The Western Woman’s Harem”
Men influence and establish control by manipulating time and light. Young and skinny is the beauty ideal for men and therefore women must go through extremes to conform to these ideals. This is a form of symbolic violence and also hinders women’s capability to seek power.
