Midterm Flashcards
what is the difference between Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy- the study of the structures and shape of the body and body parts and their relation to one another
Physiology- the study of the body and its parts work or function
what is the difference between gross anatomy and and microscopic
gross anatomy- big, visible with eye
microscopic- small, visible with aid
list the levels of organization of living organisms from the smallest component to largest
atomy, cells, tissues, organ system, organism
what is the definition of an organ and tissue
organ- a structure that is composed of two or more tissue types and performs a specific function for the body
tissue- groups of similar cells that have a common function
what is the smallest unit of life
cell
list the necessary life functions
maintaining boundaries, movement, responsiveness or irritability, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, growth
list the survival needs
nutrients, oxygen, water, body temperature, atmospheric pressure
what is homeostasis
the body’s ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions even though the outside world is continuously changing
what are the three components used to maintain homeostasis
receptor- some type of sensor that maintains and responds to changes in the environment
control center- determines the level at which a variable is to be maintained, analysis and determines response
effector- provides means for control center’s response to the stimulus
what type of feedback does your body use most
negative feedback mechanisms
