MIDTERM 4 Flashcards
Official measures in case of confirmation of African swine fever on a holding
1. all the pigs on the holding are killed and their carcases processed
2. all contaminated material (meat, semen, ova) or waste must be destroyed, processed or treated
3. cleaning and disinfection of all premises, vehicles and equipment under official supervision
4. meat of pigs slaughtered during the period between the probable introduction of disease to the holding and the taking of official measures shall wherever possible be traced and processed under official supervision
Topic 20
Official measures in case of confirmation of classical swine fever on a holding
1. all the pigs on the holding are killed and their carcasses rendered
2. any material (meat, sperm, ova) or waste likely to be contaminated is destroyed, rendered or processed
3. cleaning and disinfection under official supervision
4.Meat of pigs slaughtered between the probable introduction of the disease to the holding and the taking of official measures must be traced and processed under official supervision
5. An epidemiological enquiry is to be carried out
Topic 21
Official measures in case of confirmation of classical swine fever in feral pigs
1. Determination of the infected area
2.Official surveillance on pig holdings in the area
3. Official census of all pigs in the area
4.Isolation of domestic pigs from feral pigs
5. No pigs enter or leave the holding without veterinary authorisation
6. Written plan to eradicate the disease in the infected area
7. Collection of information on the geographical distribution of the disease and the number of feral pigs in and around the infected area
AND
8. Instigate an information campaign to increase hunter awareness of official control measures and provide guidance on the removal of feral pigs found dead or shot
Topic 22
Use of vaccination in case of confirmation of classical swine fever
1. Preventative CSF vaccination is prohibited in the EU
2. In the case of confirmation, the member state concerned should submit an emergency vaccination plan to the Commission for both farm pigs and feral pigs, making use of marker vaccines only
Marker vaccine = a vaccine that can elicit a protective immunity distinguishable from the immune response elicited by the natural infection with the wild type virus by means of laboratory tests
Topic 23
Definition of Aujeszky disease infection free swine herd
1. No infections in the last 2 years
2. None of the pigs have been vaccinated in the last 12 months
3. Isolation, movement control, laboratory examination and record-keeping standards are sufficient
4. All breeding sows and boars, as well as a representative sample of fattening pigs have tested negative for Aujeszky disease
AND
5. All insemination or natural breeding is undertaken using Aujeszky-negative semen/boars
Topic 24
Definition of potentially rabid animal
1. Animal shows symptoms of the disease
OR
2. Animal that is symptomless but has been bitten by a rabid or a potentially rabid
animal
OR
3. A wild mammal that behaves strangely or attacks humans
Topic 29
Definition of potentially rabies-infected animal
Animal that has been or may have been in contact with a rabid or potentially rabid
animal within the last 90 days
Topic 30
Definition of rabies risky animal
1. Any mammal that has attacked or bitten humans
OR
2. A dog that has not received an anti-rabies vaccination in accordance with regulations
Topic 31
Official measures with potentially rabid animals
Potentially rabid domestic animals or susceptible animals kept in captivity:
1. shall be killed
OR
2. upon the animal keeper’s request, put under official monitoring for 90 days if the conditions of such monitoring can be ensured without any problem.
- animals showing clinical symptoms = inspected daily
- animals not showing clinical symptoms = inspected weekly.
Poentially rabid stray or wild animals
1. shall be killed
AND
2. The official veterinarian shall be informed without delay
Topic 32
Official measures with potentially rabies-infected animals
shall be put under official monitoring for 90 days !!!
Carnivores:
1. Monitored under separation at the place of keeping, inspected once every 3 weeks
OR
2. Monitored at an official place if safe separation is not possible
Non-carnivores:
1. Inspected once every 3 weeks
2. During monitoring period, animals should be kept and preferably tied and separated to avoid their contact with humans and other animals
Topic 33
Official measures with potentially rabies risky animals
⭢ Placed under official monitoring for 14 days and (unless they already have one) the dog should be marked with an electronic transponder (microchip) at the owner’s cost
⭢ After the monitoring period, it is necessary to order an anti-rabies vaccination of the dogs not having a valid anti-rabies vaccination
Carnivores:
1.Monitored on the dog keepers site OR in lack thereof, on any other site available and suitable for such purpose, inhibiting any contact with humans and other animals, with rules of preventative vaccination of dogs against rabies
2. Animals showing any clinical symptoms shall be inspected daily until they are fully recovered, whilst animals not showing clinical symptoms shall be inspected weekly
Non-carnivores:
1. Monitored in isolation at the place of their usual keeping
2. It is prohibited to slaughter, treat or attempt to treat any rabies risky animal
Topic 34
Rules of preventive vaccination of dogs against rabies
The animal keeper shall arrange at his/her own cost, for the vaccination of all dogs above 3 months of age, to be performed by the veterinarian responsible for the animal health supervision of such dogs, as follows…
1. Within 30 days after reaching 3 months of age
2. Within 6 months after the first vaccination
3. Every year afterwards
Topic 35
Public health measures in case of rabies
The official veterinary shall notify the competent regional institution of medical authority if:
1. he/she confirms rabies or potential rabies
2. he/she becomes aware of the fact that a rabid or potentially rabid or potentially rabiesinfected animal has bitten (attacked) any person
3. Upon finding a wound caussed by a dog, cat or wild animal, the physician shall immdetiately notify in writing the competent official veterinary authority about the information available with regard to the circumstances of the case including, in particular, the name and home address of the animal keeper - The official veterinaran shall take necessary measures without delay.
4. An autposy of a rabid or potentially rabid animal or the removal of its head for diagnostic purposes may be performed only in protective clothes to exclude the risk of infections.
Topic 36
Official measures in case of confirmation of Newcastle disease on a holding
1. All poultry in the holding are to be killed on the spot and carcasses & eggs destroyed
2. Any substance or waste liable to contamination is to be destroyed or treated
3. Cleaning and disinfection is to be performed on the holding and reintroduction of birds cannot occur for at least 21 days after disinfection
4. Meat of poultry slaughtered and hatching eggs laid during the presumed incubation period are to be traced and destroyed (poultry hatched from these eggs are to be placed under official surveillance)
Topic 37
Official measures in case of confirmation of Newcastle disease in pigeons
