Microbial Infection (10) Flashcards
How do viruses replicate?
by hijacking the host cell’s nuclear synthetic machinery and causing cytolysis
How do bacteria replicate?
binary fission
How are bacteria different from eukaryotes in terms of structure of the cell?
- no internal membranes
- haploid (single copy of a chromosome)
- no cytoskeleton
- cell wall
- flagellum for movement
Recall an example of a virus and the disease it causes
HIV (retrovirus)
causes AIDS
Recall an example of a bacterium and the disease it causes
Shigella, Neisseria meningitidis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis
How do fungi replicate?
- asexually by fragmentation
- budding, or producing spores
- fragments of hyphae can grow new colonies
Recall an example of fungi
Candida albicans
How do protozoa replicate?
- in the host by binary fission
- or by formation of trophozoites inside a cell
- asexual
Recall an example of protozoa
Plasmodium (causes Malaria) or Leishmaniasis
How do helminths replicate?
life cycles outside the human host
Give examples of Helminths
Roundworms (e.g. Ascaris), Flatworms, Tapeworms
