microbial identification Flashcards
is an antibiogram good for selecting specific therapy or empiric therapy
empiric since you use antibiograms before susceptibility is tested
which microbes do not get MICs
atypical, anaerobes, skin colonizers
what is special about serology
testing antigens or antibodies in the blood, cannot show when the infection too k place, good for organisms that can’t go through a culture
what is special about PCRs
fast turnaround, detection of antigens and other things, but no susceptibilities; has high sensitivity/specificity
what information does MALDI TOF give you and what does it not
bacterial identification but not susceptibility
what information can automated systems give you?
microbial detection and susceptibility
what can you assume when there is bacteria in the normally sterile areas?
there is a true infection because there shouldn’t be anything
what areas of the body are sterile
blood, csf, pericardial fluid, synovial fluid/bone, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid
what areas of the body usually have colonizing flora
respiratory, skin, GU, GI
