Metric System Flashcards
Metric System
System of measurement used everywhere in the world and in the sciences (including medicine)
- Except U.S , Myanmar, Liberia
what are the commonly used Units of the Metric system
Measurement : Length , Volume, Mass, Time, Temperature
Units : meters (M) , liters(L), grams (g), seconds (sec), celsius ( c)
SI base units of Measurement
> Mass= the grams (g) - The weight of paper clip > Length = the meter (m) - A little longer than a yard stick > Volume= the liter (L) - A little more than a quart > Temperature= degrees celsius -c
Metric Prefixes
- the metric system uses prefixes to represent units smaller and larger than the fundamental unit by factors of 10.
- For example; a kilometer is 1000 times a meter
- Prefixes are very convenient when working with extremely large or small units of measure
- instead of 0.000000075 grams (g), we can say 75 nanograms (ng)
Prefixes
-one of the clever ideas behind the system was to use only multiples of ten
Commonly used prefixes of the Metric System
- Kilo ( k)
- Deci (d)
- Centi (c)
- Milli (m)
- Micro (mc or U)
- Nano (n)
Metric system Prefixes are expressed as fraction or in scientific notation
Kilo- 1,000 or 10^3 Deci- 1/10 or 10^-1 Centi- 1/100 or 10^-2 Milli- 1/1000 or 10^-3 Micro - 1/1,000,000 or 10^-6 Nano- 1/ 1,000,000,000 or 10^-9
The units are combined with the prefixes
- Micro + meter = micrograms ( um)
- Kilo+gram = kilogram (kg)
- Milli+ liter= milliliter (ml)
- Nano+ meter = nanometer ( nm)
- Micro + gram = microgram ( mcg/ug)
- Milli + meter = millimeter ( mm)
memorized the equivalencies
1in = 2.54 cm
1cm= 0.39 in
1min= 60 sec
1ft = 12 in
1kg = 2.2 kg
1lb = 0.454kg
pure H20:
1ml= 1cm^3= 1g
