methods of collecting population data* Flashcards
census
Governments can carry out a census - this is a survey which is carried out every 10 years.
Each householder is asked to complete a detailed questionnaire, by law, about the number of people living in their home.
Householders answer other questions on their social, economic and cultural background
areas of deprivation are highlighted so the Gov can target its funding
employment is another focus so that the Gov can plan for job opportunities and training
Vital registrations
records kept of births and deaths, this allows the Gov to have an updated population figure between census.
also helps to allocate funding to appropriate services (eg. increase in birth rate in Aberdeen City, more money towards maternity services and schools)
Scottish Household Survey
this is an annual survey.
It’s based on a random sample of the population and is a cheaper way to gather data than carrying out a full census
visa applications
helps provide characteristics (age, gender, race) of people entering and leaving the UK.
Helps to ensure criteria (eg. net migration) is met and infrastructure is adequate (eg. housing for migrants)
NHS records
obtain information regarding peoples health
