metabolism Flashcards
what is anabolism
building up
what is catabolism
breaking down
what is the term metabolism used to refer to
the enzyme catalyzed reactions and the sum of all of the reactions
what is the goal of metabolism
to obtain chemical energy in the form of ATP from degradation of energy rich nutrients that our bodies take in
what does a metabolic pathway mean
a series of linked reactions that are coordinately regulated
what is energy required to power (3 fundamental needs)
muscle contraction
cell movement
biosynthesis
how do enzymes speed up a reaction
knocking down activation energy
what is delta g not
the free energy change under standard conditions
what is the metabolism energy currency
ATP
why is ATP used as the energy carrier of energy in the cell?
it has high phosphoric transfer potential, meaning that it readily transfers its phosphate group to water
what can ATP do?
it can act as both a donor and an acceptor of phosphate groups
what are two major sources of fuel for humans (inside body)
glucose and fatty acids
which one gives more energy? sugars or fatty acids? why?
fatty acids have far fewer groups of oxygen (far more reduced)
what is substrate level phosphorylation
when a phosphate group is cleaved and removed to produce ATP
what are the two activated carriers of electrons
NAD+ and FAD
