Metabolic Syndrome - International Diabetes Federation Diagnosis

A

The International Diabetes Federation
produced a consensus set of diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome in 2005 - widely used:
Requires presence of CENTRAL OBESITY
Defined as
- waist circumference >94cm for European men, >80cm for European women
(NB Ethnicity specific values for other groups)
PLUS ANY OF THE 2 FOLLOWING FACTORS
- Raised triglyceride level >1.7mmol/L or specif treatment for this lipid abnormality
- Reduced HDL cholesterol < 1.03mmol/L in men, < 1.29 mol/L in women OR specific treatment for this e.g. on Statin
- Raised BP >130/85mmHg or active treatment of HTN
- Raised fasting plasma glucose >5.6mmo/L or previously diagnosed T2DM

Metabolic Syndrome - SIGN Diagnosis

A

SIGN recommendation - for a diagnosis, at least 3 of the following:

  • Elevated waist circumference: men >102cm, women > 88cm
  • Elevated triglycerides > 1.7mmol/L
  • Reduced HDL < 1.03mmol/L in Men, < 1.29 mol/L in Women
  • Raised BP > 130/85 mmHg or active treatment of HTN
  • Raised fasting plasma glucose > 5.6mmol/L or previously diagd T2DM

Metabolic Syndrome - WHO Diagnosis

A

WHO Diagnostic Criteria require presence of DM, IGT, IFG or Insulin Resistance
PLUS 2 of the following:
- BP >140/90mmHg
- Dyslipidaemia triglycerides > 1.695mmol/L and/or high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 0.9mmol/L in Men, < 1.0mmol/L in Women
- Central obesity = waist:hip ratio > 0.9 in Men, > 0.85 in Women and/or BMI >30kg/m2
- Microalbuminuria: urinary albumin excretion: creatinine ratio > 20mg/min or albumin: creatinine ratio > 30mg/g
