What is Lactose Intolerance
A
Lactose is too big to pass through digestive tract lining
- must be broken down into galactose and glucose by lactase
- there is underproduced lactase
- lactose remains in the GI tract and ferments
symptoms = farting, diarrhoea, cramps, bloating

What is Galactosemia?
A
inherited autosomal recessive disorder of a deficiency of galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase
- can be screened for at birth
- if its not active in the eye
- aldose reductase reduces galactose into galactitol
= cataracts in the eye
symptoms = enlargement of liver, CNS failure
