memory - the working memory model Flashcards
what is the working memory model?
it is a representation of short term memory, that suggests that STM uses different sub units that are co ordinated by a central decision making system.
what is the central executive?
this is the component that coordinated the activities of all of the other three subsystems.
what is the phonological loop?
it processes information in terms of sound, it is divided into 2 things - the phonological store which stores words u hear and the articulatory process which allows maintenance rehearsal.
what is the visuo -spatial sketchpad?
this processes visual and spatial info, often called the inner eye.
what are the 2 parts of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
the visual cache- stores visual data.
the inner scribe- which records the arrangement of objects in the visual field of vision.
what is the episodic buffer?
it brings together material from all of the other subsystems into a single memory, instead of them being separate strands, also works as a bridge between working memory and LTM. a temporary store for info.
who came up with the working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch, and is an explanation of how one aspect of memory is organised.
A03-
what is one strength of the working memory model?
the case study of KF, after his brain injury, he has poor STM ability for audio info but no issue for visual info. his phonological loop was damaged but his visual spatial sketchpad was still intact. this strongly suggests the existence of separate memory stores.
